March Results - Message from Blake, Pete and Erik Nordstrom

Today we released our March sales results.
Total Company: comp sales +5.1%
total sales +10.1%
Nordstrom
(Combined FLS/Direct): comp sales +5.5%
Nordstrom Rack: comp sales -0.1%
We had a good month in March, particularly considering Easter falls a few weeks later this year. Because of the calendar shift, we’ll need to combine our March numbers with April in order to get a better sense of our true performance. We also had a very successful Triple Rewards event in March. It’s encouraging to see how customers continue to respond favorably to our bonus points events and our Fashion Rewards program overall.
Coming off of the State of the Company meetings, we couldn’t be happier with the support and constructive feedback we’ve received from all of you during these meetings. We’d like to again thank everyone for taking part and giving us this opportunity to recognize your outstanding efforts over the past year. Everyone is really focused on the customer and we’re starting 2011off on the right foot.
Last month was also one of our busiest for Rack openings. We opened a new Rack every Thursday in March. Opening 5 new Racks in one month is no easy task, and we’re grateful to all our store opening and regional support teams for their hard work in successfully executing these openings. We want to thank store managers Farryl Rosenberg, Jason Torres, Kevin Herzog, Bob Bailey and Quincy Jones and their respective teams at our Aventura, Austin, Arlington, Fremont and Charlotte Racks for doing a good job of taking care of customers. Their combined efforts drove in more than $4.5 million in volume over the stores’ opening weekends, representing a collective +17.1% increase over plan.
Tomorrow we’re looking forward to the opening of our first Nordstrom in Delaware located at Christiana Mall and 116th full-line store overall. We had a terrific gala last night and were able to welcome over 1,600 customers to preview the new store and shop with us. Our gala raised over $123,000 to benefit the Delaware Art Museum, Nemours/Alfred I. Dupont Hospital for Children and the Wilmington, Delaware Chapter of The Links, Incorporated in support of their work in the local community. Our store looks great and Terisha Johnson and the entire Christiana team are excited to open our doors tomorrow and get to work on serving customers.

This month we wanted to share a few customer comments from Facebook and Twitter. We’re fortunate that our customers want to share their feedback with us and we’re glad to have these channels to help us extend service and address opportunities.
Facebook:Penny from designer from your .com customer service department gets triple kudos =). She helped me locate the YSL Gipsy shoe for me in a 35 which was showing up as out of stock. I called yesterday and a designer specialist transferred me to a store location and I initially put the item on hold so that I can order it the next day but I forgot the store number. So after talking to penny, she called all the store locations that could possibly have it and found out that the topanga,cali store had the shoe on hold for me. Now i call that customer service =)))).

Spent 2 hours at the Nordstrom Rack Grand Opening today in Austin, Texas! GREAT store! The employees were exceptional!!!!!! Can't wait to go back!!! Spent WAY TOO MUCH money but look at all the GREAT deals I got!!!! Now my FAVORITE store!!!!!!!

Hi Nordstrom- I just wanted to ask about your Encore section. Why aren't there more of your dresses that are offered online in store? I vary from a size 14 to a size 20 depending on the store and style. I ordered a gorgeous dress online and it didn't fit properly, so I took it back to the store, and they didn't have them at the store. So I had to settle for something else. Maybe you can start carrying more of the gorgeous dresses that you do in your regular women's department in larger sizes too?

I am not certain how many people know of what I am about to say... Nordstrom is 1 of the TOP 3 companies in the world recognized for their outstanding customer service! With that being said, I recently received a hand bag along with the matching wallet as a gift for my birthday. I have NEVER seen anything so beautiful in my life! My fiancé shops there quite frequently and has always been very impressed with the service he receives. This was the first gift he bought from Nordstrom and was so amazed with the sales person and the presentation of the gift, he asked the associate if they sent her to a training to learn how to present a gift purchase and she replied "yes, they do" and continued to explain the process of how the presentation process works. Needless to say, we will continue to purchase through Nordstrom and will always tell this story of the how your company holds up to their reputation of Excellent Customer Service and quality of products.

I feel like it's part of my everyday go to Nordstrom at least twice per week. I love the store next to my place therefore, I spend a great time there shopping, having lunch at Bistro, alone or with a friend. I have enjoyed Nordstrom since day one.
